Ramping up for the Imapenguin Screencast Launch

Posted by Michael Fri, 02 May 2008 12:16:00 GMT

Next week we’re going to launch Imapenguin Screencasts. We’re in post production of the first few now.

The short short version of the service is: Learn something really interesting and useful from an expert for $9. They’ll be about an hour and cover topics like:

  • Mac OS X Security
  • Ubuntu Security
  • Launching and managing your business website with Wordpress
  • Network Mapping with Open Source tools
  • Install and configure Gentoo (you know you want to geek out with Gentoo)
  • Snort

Check back with us at Imapenguin.com next week!

Ubuntu 8.04 Beta working well for us

Posted by Michael Thu, 10 Apr 2008 18:49:00 GMT

We’re active open source developers and we’ve upgraded some laptops and a server to help look for bugs in the software we often use. Both the server and desktop versions of Ubuntu 8.04 have been very stable for us thus far. We’ll be providing support for upgrades as usual, but it’s normally pretty trivial to upgrade from one version to the next.

Arthur C Clarke

We’re very sad to hear that we lost Arthur C Clarke today. He was 90.

Thanks for everything Arthur, we miss you already.

Happy Pi Day

Posted by Michael Fri, 14 Mar 2008 14:51:00 GMT

Today is the day to celebrate Pi!

Didn’t know that? Us either. According to PiDay.org March 14th is the day we all celebrate Pi.

I’m personally going to celebrate eating some Pie, and then using Pi to calculate the pie’s measurements.

I know, pretty sad.

Connecting to Apple Remote Desktop from Ubuntu

Posted by Michael Mon, 03 Mar 2008 18:36:00 GMT

Apple uses the tightvnc protocol for remote desktop. So install tightvnc:

sudo apt-get install xtightvncviewer

Then update your default programs to use it instead of what’s included in Ubuntu Desktop:

sudo update-alternatives --set vncviewer /usr/bin/xtightvncviewer

That’s it. In ubuntu’s RDP client, select the vnc protocol when connecting to a mac.

Linus Torvolds Keynote from Linuxworld - in 2000

Posted by Michael Thu, 28 Feb 2008 13:59:00 GMT

My good friend Jake and I trucked up to new york and were sitting pretty close to where this camera is to watch this speech. We were fairly new to Linux at this point, the year before I was RedHat certified for the first time and only about 4 years prior to this speech I installed my first Slackware system (it was on a stack of floppies and took about 12 hours to install).

This was the conference where we came home with about 20 pounds of giveaways. Ahh, the good ol days.

Watch it here:

http://www.linux.com/feature/127400

He talks quite a bit about Unix fragmentation. It’s striking in 2008 how fragmented Linux has become.

He also says, in 2000, Java is dying.

What's new in FreeBSD 7.0?

Posted by Michael Tue, 26 Feb 2008 16:13:00 GMT

Oreilly has a pretty good article on what’s exciting in FreeBSD 7.

We’re big fans of Sun’s ZFS file system which is working well for us in the RC versions of FreeBSD 7.

I'm on Firefox 3 and can't go back

Posted by Michael Tue, 26 Feb 2008 00:24:00 GMT

I switched to Firefox 3 on all of my machines. The page rendering speed improvements are so dramatic that there’s no way I can go back to “stable” versions.

It’s almost as fast as Safari. Almost.
