Get it here, while it’s hot off the presses. I know, we’re such nerds…
Here’s an emulator screenshot.

We penguins have been discussing publicly since we first started developing on mobile back in 2001 that mobile phone apps will continue to largely suck until some major players come up with a reasonably open platform. That was finally announced today:

Upgrading is a snap. Do:
sudo sed -e 's/\sfeisty/ gutsy/g' -i /etc/apt/sources.list sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

We’re not going to “cover” tomorrow’s launch of OS X Leopard, but we are heavy users of OS X. We will be upgrading ourselves and helping our customers upgrade. If you need help or just need to ask a question, support@imapenguin.com is the place. Advice is always free :-)

Oh and one other “we” and “us” note, we’re converting our iSCSI SAN into a Solaris box so we can utilize ZFS. We’ll be posting How-to’s and lessons learned in using this system soon.

Seth points out in his blog post today titled I can’t afford it that most users can in fact afford it, you’re just not telling your story correctly.
We penguins have stopped what we’re doing to work on our story. We’re going to make sure it best reflects us and what we can do for you.
I know it sounds like a lot of “we” and “us”, but in order to help you best, we need to work on we and us for half a day.

I just upgraded my IBM T41 to Ubuntu 7.10 by doing:
update-manager -c
from the command line. This forces a dist-upgrade check and runs through a pretty slick upgrader. 20 mins and 1 reboot later and she’s back and running without any issues at all.
Very sweet. I love it when things just work.

Get it while it’s hot.

This month, Slashdot turns ten(like 10). I’m user number 12353 which is pretty early on the nerd-o-meter. I used to be an avid reader, but my readership has waned of late. “Back in the day” (think 1999) it was not uncommon for me to check Slashdot every 10 minutes to see what news had broken.
The slashdot format was one truly innovative when it was launched and it helped usher in the era of user interaction on the internet.
Anyway, some people (me included) are doing an anniversary party on Oct 23. Signup and details are here.

Somehow, I think through my excellent magic skills, I’ve managed to have NEVER used Microsoft Outlook. I’ve been designing systems since 1995 and never, ever used it in production anything for my own email account.
It’s been a few years since I even tested it…
I’m designing a system for a client and I setup a Windows XP box inside VMWare and installed Outlook. On starting it for the first time, I got 90% of the way though the new mail wizard and Outlook crashed. When I try to start it again, it gives me a “cannot open mail stores” and exits.
Yep, fresh XP install (patched of course), new Outlook install.
Completely useless.
I don’t know how you Windows admins even wake up and go to work in the morning, I really don’t.
